📦 Shipping Space TabPage

Detailed Specification of the Shipping Area Sizing Calculation Tab in TeraCalc2

📋 Overview

The Shipping Space TabPage calculates the required floor footprint for picking, inspection, packing, temporary staging, and shipping dock areas based on outbound throughput parameters.

💡 What is TabPage?

A TabPage represents an individual tab screen within a master TabControl container. In the distribution center sizing suite, multiple calculation modules are organized into distinct tabs, with "Shipping Space" implemented as one dedicated screen.

  • One dedicated tab page inside the master TabControl container
  • Consolidates all shipping dock and staging area calculation parameters
  • Integrates with other module tabs (Inbound, Storage, etc.)
  • Supports standalone calculations and reporting views

🎯 Purpose & Applications

1. Determining Optimal Shipping Footprint

Core Objectives of this TabPage:

  • Footprint Area Calculation: Computes total required shipping floor area (sq. meters)
  • Zoning Plan: Layout planning for picking, packing, inspection, and staging zones
  • Work Throughput Capacity: Calculates hourly shipping throughput capability
  • Staffing Plan: Estimates required headcount for picking and packing operations
  • Equipment Investment: Determines required equipment counts and system capacities

2. Picking Methodology Adaptability

The Shipping Space TabPage adapts to multiple order picking strategies:

Picking Strategy Description Target Scenario Space Profile
Single Picking Picks orders individually line-by-line B2B, low-volume high-SKU Aisle-travel focused
Batch (Total) Picking Batch picks multiple orders followed by sorting B2C, high-volume shipping Requires sorting buffer area
Zone Picking Divides warehouse into dedicated zone pickers Large-scale fulfillment centers Inter-zone transfer space
Assort Picking Gathers items by SKU then sorts by destination Scheduled route deliveries Sorting station required

🖥️ Interface Architecture

Main UI Components

1. Basic Parameters Group

Sets core throughput metrics and picking strategies:

  • Daily Outbound Volume: Average daily volume (pieces/cases/orders)
  • Peak Factor: Peak-to-average volume multiplier
  • Picking Methodology: Single/Total/Zone/Assort selector
  • Active SKU Count: Total active item catalog count

2. Detailed Conditions Group

Detailed process parameters per operation stage:

  • Picking Parameters: Labor productivity, location density, automation type
  • Packing Parameters: Packaging style, workbench count, pack time
  • Inspection Parameters: Audit rate, inspection mode, bench space
  • Shipping Dock Parameters: Dock bay count, loading cycle time, vehicle size

🔢 Calculation Logic

Core Shipping Footprint Formula

Total Shipping Space (m²) = Picking Area + Packing Area + Inspection Area + Dock Area + Staging Area

Total Gross Space Calculation

Total Gross Shipping Space = (Picking + Packing + Inspection + Dock + Staging) × (1 + Buffer Ratio)

⚠️ Important Notes & Constraints

1. Data Accuracy & Reliability

⚠️ Garbage In, Garbage Out (GIGO)

Sizing accuracy depends directly on the quality of raw input parameters:

  • Outbound Volume Data: Use at least 6–12 months of historical WMS shipment logs.
  • Peak Factor: Use 90th or 95th percentile peak ratios rather than single-day anomalies.
  • Labor Productivity: Base rates on actual measured engineering time studies.
  • Active SKU Count: Incorporate projected business growth for future horizon planning.
